Crissy Field Status 5/30/02 The beach has been shifting throughout the season but it is greatly improved from last year. By April, large amount of new sand had been deposited on the beach. The outflow from the marsh has turned back to the east and some of that sand is washing back out. The Park Service continues to monitor the situation. Last year the Park Service offered to remove rubble. If the beach degrades significantly, we will ask them to follow through on this offer. There Presidio Trust and the Park Service are looking into ways to modify the marsh so that it will be ecologically viable. There has been some discussion about he possibility of enlarging the marsh. Any new plan should be examined to ensure that it protects East Beach. The Presidio Trust has released the new Management Plan for the Presidio. The plan does allow for some lodging at Crissy Field. The lodging would be located in or near Stilwell Hall which is located near the west end of the airfield, about 3/4 mile west of the windsurfing launch at East Beach. Otherwise, the preferred use of the buildings on the bay side of Doyle Drive would be cultural and educational facilities. The Tennessee Hollow Creek will ultimately be restored so that it will feed into the Crissy Field tidal marsh. This may have some effect on the way that water flows out of the marsh. The Presidio Trust indicates that it is committed to the long term health of the marsh and that an ongoing technical study will examine options for ensuring the long-term ecological viability of the marsh. There are no significant changes planned for the roadways or parking near East Beach. A water taxi/ferry serving the Torpedo Wharf will be considered. http://www.presidiotrust.org/documents/ptip/PTMP/chapt3_crissyfield.pdf |
